13 October: Exam answers

Apparently, the fact that I shouted at 12 bio was surprising – you will note I did NOT shout at 11p, so you must have done better in your exams than they did!!

Here is the link to the answers for chemistry, physics, astronomy, geology, micro-organisms and genetics.

I will mark the geology tonight, and then you will have your full set back…

14 August Just thinking

Some of you have already got some ideas about what you would like to do after you finish school – medicine, music, radiology and so forth. And soon you will be choosing your subjects for next year. These subject choices are provisional, as it depends on what you pass as to what you take, and also the number of people choosing various things might decide if we are running the subject next year. Can I please suggest you go look at some of the university sites to see what the entry requirements are for any courses you are thinking of doing? For instance, the entry requirements for medicine are different at Otago and Auckland, so you need to know which school you are going to when you choose subjects… If you have no idea what you are going to do try to choose subjects that you like, and also keep your options open.

29 July Unit standard and some homework

That unit standard seems to be going okay – though I have only marked about four of them! But I found the other one on physics, so lets do that on Friday. Any objections, voice them…. The homework was page 87 questions one and two (from memory) Could have been page 81? But it is the first couple of questions on electricity in your green book. Mark your own, the answers are in the back of the book. Any problems let me know, here or at class.

28 July Electricty equations

If your brain is anything like mine you are starting to go into a kind of daze now when I put equations on the board. When I was at school I never really understood what the equations meant or when I was supposed to use them… What I did know was that distance was measured in metres, time was measured in seconds and speed (or velocity) was measured in metres/second. So you could say I knew the units of what I was trying to find out. So I would find an equation that gave me the units of what I was looking for, and see if I could combine the numbers I got in the question using that equation. Its a pretty cack-handed way of going about things now I look at it, but it was successful enough.Learning that “I” stood  for current, which was measured in Amps would have been a huge leap forward when I was 15…Hope you are all having a lovely evening, remember to study for the car test :)

You found out about how voltage gets used up round a series circuit, and how parallel circuits are like magic, and all are little independent circuits… Next week we have a unit standard test on Tuesday – I think it is contextual and on cars so we have to do some Weird Stuff on Monday. Congrats to Mos, Josh and Luke who got a 2 credit unit standard done today while the rest of you caught up to them… We made it! First week down! Weekend! Hooray!!

I was just cruising in itunes (as you do when you could be marking instead!) and found this – I haven’t listened to one myself, but no doubt they are interesting (to biologists) http://askabiologist.asu.edu/

On this site I plan to give you information, do some practise questions and we can talk about the right answers, and why they are right… but the most important part is actually the comments section – this gives you a chance to ask questions which can be answered by me or by Anyone Who Knows! I can post links here to useful sites and so can you – we can help each other. If you don’t use it, I will just remove it.

If you want to comment, just click on the comments link below. There is a comment in the post above, if you want to read it click on the 1 comment link (or the number might have changed!)
